Harry Potter Vs Twilight - Let the battle commence…Twilight takes the floor.

Now, before I start I’m going to make it quite clear: I am a Harry Potter fan. A huge one. A huge big HP freak, if you will. I know and love the tiny bits in the HP universe that the casual reader would (and never will) remember; like, how many staircases there are in Hogwarts (142), when Voldemort was born (1926), even how to spell Luna’s dad’s name Xenophilius correctly, and who’s playing him in the film (Rhys Ifans apparently).

This being said, you would presume I would be either in the ‘Twilight sickens me’ category, or that I’m just a big fan-girl of teenage/children’s fiction.

But, you would be wrong on both counts.

I was part of the first group, until a mixed message to my sister resulted in her buying the first three books of the Twilight Saga for me. I didn’t touch for a long time, however a loss of the internet and having no TV, I was forced to read. And so, I read.

Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse. I would have to say I am disappointed by them and yet, I cannot force myself to hate them.

I think that Meyer’s style of writing is deserving of a fiction website, not mass hysteria. However, I have to say that the characters she has set up, well, at least some of them, you cannot help but like.

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT EDWARD OR BELLA.

As far as I am concerned, they can both jump into a canoe and drown somewhere very shallow.

It’s the other characters that you find yourself laughing at and learning to love them.

She made Bella too ‘unperfect’, clumsy, normal. (And that silly girl who plays her in the film can’t even act). She made Edward TOO perfect, and half the books are her describing some part of Edward as ‘beautiful’, and not worthy of her main character.

Now, Jacob, on the other hand I adore. Cute, funny, and so perfectly UNperfect. He loves Bella despite her being in love with his ARCH enemy, and despite her USING him.

Another character I like is Alice. Funny, sweet, and you can imagine that she would be someone you’d really get along with. And she freakin’ kicks ass too.

I still, however, can’t understand the hype with it. It’s far too simple, overly-romantic.

And, its made vampires look pretty tame. I love scary vampires.
